There’s something about the idea that society has a say in what is considered appropriate and inappropriate for women to wear at different stages in their lives that really gets to me.

Recently, I was in a fitting room trying on a pair of shorts that I ultimately walked away from because even though they fit beautifully and felt great, there was an idea stuck in my mind that since I’m a mom, I shouldn’t wear shorts as short as they were.

We should dress however we want to

For all the wrong reasons, I walked away from those shorts that I looked super-cute in.

Reasons that extend to women in all stages of life, reasons that dictate at what age you should stop wearing dresses above the knee, or whether it’s okay to wear leggings as pants, whether you’re too fat or too skinny to wear skinny jeans or whether you’re too old to wear a bikini.

Honestly, I’m really tired of the stigma surrounding what clothes women decide to dress themselves in.

This summer I declared that as a mom of two with stretch marks and cellulite I will dress myself however I please, including wearing a bikini to the beach and the pool because that’s what I feel good in!

The same should go for every woman.

As women, our bodies experience so much in life—every single one of us should be proud of the skin we’re in and refuse to let anyone tell us whether what we choose to wear or not where is appropriate for our age, size, fitness level or anything else.

So whether you’re 15 or 50, if you’re comfortable in a two-piece, here are a few reasons you should put it on with your head held high and go out and enjoy some fun in the sun.

Wear what you’re comfortable in

If you feel good in a bikini, that’s what you should wear. Period. If anyone out there feels a certain type of way about your appearance they can simply turn the other way and not look.

What you choose to clothe yourself in won’t affect anyone else’s enjoyment unless they choose to let it. And if they do, they are the person with a problem, not you.

In this case, age really is just a number

What you choose to wear to swim or go to the beach in has nothing to do with how old you are and everything to do with how confident you are.

You’ve earned your confidence and you deserve to express it how you see fit.

Everybody has a beach body

No, seriously. If you have a body and go to the beach you have a beach body.

There’s no point in waiting until you’re in better shape or waiting until you feel better about yourself to wear the swimsuit you love.

Whether in a one-piece or a two-piece all of us at the beach are barely dressed anyway.

Are we really going to get hung up on a tiny bit of midriff?
