One of the best places for world-class surfing is the island of Fuerteventura. With an easy, laid back lifestyle, this slice of paradise off the coast of Africa offers excellent surfing conditions year round.

But beyond surfing, Fuerteventura is a great place to get away from it all and enjoy the laidback island lifestyle.

Not many people know about Fuerteventura

It’s a well kept secret, and this has helped it maintain a quiet peaceful ambiance.

Here you won’t find crowds or chiringuitos, mega-hotels or chain restaurants. It’s not a party spot.

Fuerteventura is laid back. It’s also a perfect surf spot.

Fuerteventura is one of the Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa. Politically the island belongs to Spain.

Recently, the island was declared a biosphere reserve by the UNESCO. It’s name means: Strong Winds. In French: Great Adventure.

Fuerteventura has an arid climate and the landscape is desert-like. Between the sand dunes, barely paved roads will lead you to beautiful, pristine beaches.

There you’ll find wide open space, turquoise-blue waters, and a peaceful atmosphere.

Fuerteventura is for you if:

  • You want peace and rest.
  • You love surfing.
  • You don’t care whether the beaches are nudist or not.
  • You just want to hang with friends and not show-off your latest beach attire.
  • You are happy eating on the beach.
  • You don’t like crowds.
  • You need to get away from the city.
  • You want to forget the rush of  “life.”
  • You want to travel light and spend your time in a bathing suit and shorts.

Fuerteventura is the place where I go and recharge. It’s a place where I can let go of any hang-ups and be myself.

I just chill on the beach and chat with my friends Pedro and Cristina who have been living there for years.

We enjoy great dinners at their home and chat without having to check our watches or iPhones.

Time on the island comes to a standstill. It’s a place where the laptop is the last thing to come out of my bag.

Fuerteventura is also an ageless island. You’ll find retirees, young and old surfers, and families with kids.

If you’re looking for extravagance and luxury, you’re in the wrong place. The only luxuries you will find here are peace and quiet, uncrowded beaches and easy-going folks living the simple life.

And awesome waves.
